The Singer
Short Film
Co-Writer and Director
In the loud streets of Glasgow, deaf song-writer Joe meets busker Andy. The two learn to communicate over their love of music and realise together they can create something unique.
This short film co-written by myself and Jamie Rea (who also stars in it) is about a young deaf man and his yearning to perform to music. It charts the idiosyncratic relationship which develops between this deaf artist and a world weary rock singing busker as they try to find common ground and a new language with which to create songs.
I was inspired by seeing Jamie perform to a song at his showcase performance at the RCS some years back. Jamie, who is profoundly deaf, ' sign- sang' using his hands and the evocative poetry of his hands had me in tears. It was profoundly moving.
So I approached him to write this short with me and we collaborated for months over zoom with an interpreter.
Jack Stewart co-stars as the beleaguered busker and their on screen chemistry is tender, nuanced and palpable.
